Are sleeping Tablets safe?

Oryana Angel studies the health risks of sleeping pills and considers that the dangers of prolonged use are considerable.

The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) recently banned several types of sleeping pills after the revelations that elite athletes relied heavily on them for long periods.

AOC reported zolpidem, sold under the trademark Stilnox, nitrazepam (sold as Mogadon) and Flunitrazepam (Rohypnol) through its blacklist. In extreme cases, athletes will receive temazepam, sold as Restoril and Normison, at the London Games.

Nearly half of Australians suffer from insomnia for some time, so, with recent fury, exactly what is safe to take?

Reasonable use of sleeping pills

In some cases, experts agree that taking sleeping pills is an appropriate short-term option.

"It is not reasonable to prescribe medication for a few days or weeks if there are reasons for it," says Professor Drew Dawson of the Appleton Institute of Behavioral Science at CQUniversity. He lists short-term reasons such as pain, jet lag or insomnia and says, "Sometimes six hours of his drug-induced are better than not sleeping at all.

However, he noted that long-term use has a significant effect, as these drugs can be psychologically addictive or behavioral.

"A rejection effect can be insomnia as soon as they stop taking them because they use artificial nausea, the body stops producing your own sleeping compounds. If you stop taking it, it will not sleep well, then you are a tablet and it has become self-defense, "Dawson said.

Stilnox has a remarkable but serious effect, says the president of the Australian Medical Association, Dr. Steve Hambleton. Heavy behaviors such as sleep, sleep disturbances and even free wrestling and even rape have been reported, especially when the drug is mixed with alcohol.

Drugs are Dangerous

"Rohypnol has gained notoriety as a rape drug to this day because it has no taste and is odorless. It is not widely available in Australia and would be very concerned about prescribing," says Hambleton.

Mogadón should also be treated with caution as it acts long term. He adds that the elderly should especially avoid this drug because the hangover effect could cause an accident or a fall.

Pharmaceutical companies require the new type of non-benzodiazepine drugs, which include Stilnox, mimic sleep patterns more natural and are less addictive.

Hambleton does not agree. "Whenever there is a new sedative, they claim it is less formidable and addictive, but it is not a sleeping pill, it is better to try to understand why not sleeping, a medical reason like sleep apnea or stress.

If the awakening between sleep cycles and no longer falling asleep is the problem, it suggests taking the dose when it comes to sleeping or even in the middle of the night if necessary.

Beim says, "The bad dream is a motive. When something like herbs works, keep them for two or three weeks to get your body back to a good routine.
